Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1990
What is your primary product or service?
Custom Doors and windows. Entire packages for homes including all interior and exterior doors and windows. Windows include built-in screens, tilt-turn options, inswing, outswing, casement, double hung, multipoint locking. Doors include an unlimited variety of species and patterns, multi point locking, folding sliding, lift and slide, extra large, pivot hinges, prehanging and prefinishing.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have been doing woodwork most of my 50 years. I started working in a cabinet shop in NYC in 1979. Extraordinary Doors was founded in 1990 with me as its only employee. I now have three experienced craftsmen working for me in the shop, a bookeeper in the office, and several subcontractors that do installations.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
There are no business in the area that specializing in making the types of doors and windows we do. Most 'Door Shops' represent larger manufacturers like Pella, Anderson, Marvin, Milguard, Jeld Wen, etc. We build all the doors and windows we sell, right here in Santa Cruz. There is no comparison in terms of the level of craftsmanship and creativity when compared with larger factory made millwork. I'm not saying those companies don't make good products. They simply cannot be versatile and creative to the degree we can.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Only one location, right here. We have shipped our products as far as Hawaii to the west and Virginia to the east, Washington to the north and Arizona to the south.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We're not really a retail store. The best way to get a look is at www.extraordinarydoors.com or call me (831) 465-1470 for the magical mystery tour.
What type of payments do you accept?
CHecks. Credit cards are more of a hassle then they are worth to my business.
Which areas do you service?
USA
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Robin A. Kopit, that's me.
